Dr. Madison Jefferson, an associate professor in history, is blackmailed into posing as a woman, a gypsy woman, by the corrupt private eye, Peter Conner, to try and trick an old gypsy woman out of a "precious gift" that she wishes to bestow upon a younger gypsy woman. He has the advantage of speaking Romany so he can talk to the crone in her native tongue. After the meeting with her is over, Pete is enraged to find that the gift was just a special blessing. That blessing leads them both on an unexpected journey.

"That thingy that got you must have been one of them movie stars from way back when. Like maybe Marilyn Monroe, you know?"

"I don't believe in ghosts, Mary."

Even with makeup on earlier in the evening his face hadn't looked like that of a real woman. Now, without paint and powder, without tricks, it wasn't just female, it was almost beautiful. Even if he could explain the changes in his face and voice, there was simply no way to explain the res. He let go of the cup and made a fist. There! He could control his muscles but only if he concentrated on the act. "Ghosts?" He murmured.
